Admiral Charles Michel, Vice Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, was onboard the Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Þór this morning to honor the Icelandic Coast Guard, the crew of the Icelandic Marine Research Institute vessel the Árni Friðriksson, ISAVIA flight crew, and the Icelandic Joint Rescue Coordination Center for their heroism in saving the lives of three U.S. citizens lost at sea off Iceland in July 2017. Admiral Michel said the rescue illustrated the humanitarian spirit of Icelanders and the importance of collaboration on search-and-rescue operations.
