Our main job in the Embassy Political Section is to follow, analyze, and report on local political developments. The Political Section also promotes U.S. mission objectives and encourages Icelandic policy decisions that support U.S. interests. The Political Officer maintains regular contact with host government officials, political and labor leaders, and other influential citizens of Iceland.
The traditionally close ties between Iceland and the United States, and their common membership of NATO, means that their interests frequently coincide. The two countries cooperate in many different areas, including defense, law enforcement, and human rights.
The Political Section also plays a key role in the research and production of various reports the U.S. Department of State publishes each year on Iceland under a mandate from the U.S. Congress. We invite you to read them and contact us with comments you might have.
